Default 60,000 Mile Service

Hey Everyone,

My car is approaching 60,000 miles and I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what I should expect cost wise. I called a local dealership and they want to charge me $550 for the service, which seems kind of high. Unfortunately I don't really have a local mechanic that I trust (I recently moved) so if I take it to a smaller shop I'm concerned about taking a chance that they actually know what they are doing.

Any suggestions? Is that price the dealer quoted me at really high or is that about what I should expect?

Thanks!

Sorry! I didn't specify what service I was looking to do.

I'm doing the regularly scheduled 60,000 mile service outlined in the manual. I need to follow all scheduled maintenance in order keep the extended warranty folks happy. I think it includes changing all fluids (maybe transmission flush, not sure), oil/filter change, etc. I'd have to look in the manual for the exact details of what they require.

all they do in that is inspect your coolant, inspect some other stuff probly change your oil and tranny fliud. you could do this yourself for 100 bucks or less.

AFAIK, they don't replace the coolant, thats once very 120k miles

$550?!??! thats regular highway robbery! Even my girlfriends out of warranty BMW services don't cost us that, were they also going to replace your shocks? lol...

The full synthetic oil change should cost you about $60 through most Mazda dealers, and the inspection should be included in that price.

I called the Mazda dealer and asked exactly what they do, here were the highlights:

-Oil change (2010 Mazda 3 - so they will probably just use regular 5W-20)
-Full inspection of all components (full suspension and brake check, basically they look over everything in the car from the seat belts to the CV boots)
-Replace coolant
-Drain and fill transmission fluid
-Replace brake fluid
-Lubricate hinges and body joints
-Rotate tires
-Clean something related to throttle gunk build up (I wasn't sure what they were talking about here)

And I double checked, they said the out-the-door price with tax was $550! They also said it would take half a day to complete.

I looked at the Mazda manual and basically it requires just a glorified oil change with a full inspection.

I'm going to call another dealer just for comparisons sake. We have at least 3 Mazda dealers in the area.

Just talked to another Mazda dealer which quoted me $499 and noted that it also includes:

-Removal of buildup in the fuel/throttle system
-New spark plugs

So I talked to the last Mazda dealer in my area... and they quoted me only $112. They go by the book, which is inspect everything and only replace fluids if necessary.

It makes me wonder how much money those dealership service departments make going "above and beyond" what is actually required in the owners manual.

Go by what Mazda outlines in the owners manual, nowhere do they say you have to replace fluids to stay within warranty, everything is marked inspect. The only thing they stress is oil changes. So all of the stuff that the dealers say you should do is pure gravy.

Having said that it is a good thing to periodically change tranny fluid, and brake fluid should be flushed every two years.

Pat.
