Drove home today, and I have nothing strange. I was at a stop light and turned the radio off, and turned the wheel at a stand still and there is a very, very slight noise from the power steering, but I've heard that in every car I've ever been in!

A very slight noise is normal, it's just the pump actually working. However, xxs0ulxx says in their first post that it was a LOUD noise--that would not be normal. A loud noise should be a trip to the dealer.

A knock is never normal except for a split second after an oil change in some conditions. A knock is a deep noise, not a high tone ticking, but a deeper sounding knocking noise in the engine. That is always bad!

A slight ticking is a normal noise on most engines. It's almost always valve train related. The sound is either lifters or followers. A tick that is slightly louder at start up, but quiets down in seconds is normal and is oil pressure related. A tick loud enough to be clearly heard 20 feet away from the car with the hood closed would be abnormal.

I get that constant and annoying whine as well. It changes pitch as you steer. I will be bringing mine in.

Does it happen while you are stationary, or only while in motion?

Mine makes a whine when turning the wheel. It is the electric portion of the hydrolic-electric steering system. Other cars with similar systems have done the same thing at low speed.

Mine only makes a noticeable sound when I am in a garage.
