I think the problem might be the rubber sealant around the windshield. I don't think it is leaking, but I think that when it is really cold it contracts and the windshield rattles a bit but after the heat warms the car and sealant it expands and then the car is normal.

I could be wrong, but this seems to be what is going on with mine now!

Could be the connection to the rear view mirror.

I had this sound as well, it seems to have gone away at the moment, i agree that it is worse the colder the weather is, but i dont think that it is the widsheild itself, rather i think that it is the widshield wiper blade rubbing on the glass. When i was having this problem it seemed that turning on the wipers would make it go away, and i havent heard this noise in some time now that i have some miles on the wipers.

Has anyone had it looked at and successfully fixed? I'm thinking of taking it in to the dealer.

I've also read on some forums that putting Pedro's Ice Wax inside the windshield seal could stop the noise, if it is indeed the seal that's making the noise.

I tried this, but it didn't work for me!

I talked to the dealer but they gave me some B.S. lip service about having to test it over several days and not providing me with a rental car, except if I want to pay out of pocket, etc... I decided to wait since it is a minor inconvenience!

That seems ridiculous. I wouldn't accept that as an answer. I'll report back later, because tonight I'm stopping by the dealer on my way home. I'm going to take one or more of the techs for a ride in the car so they can hear it for themselves.

If they give me any BS, I'm going to demand going for a test drive in a different brand new Mazda3 on the lot to see that the noise most likely is not present in it. I also haven't filled out the feedback survey yet, so if they continue to give me crap about the noise being normal, I can ask what their name is, and then tell them I'll be sure to mention their sub par service in the satisfaction survey, haha.

I'll let everyone know what they come back with.

I agree that it is ridiculous, and I gave them an incredibly bad review when they called me for the follow up questionnaire. They decided to call and "apologize" and said they would help to make it right, but I don't trust them with my car. I was waiting for an official release from Mazda USA before I would bring it back!

So I took a tech for a ride tonight to show him the noise I'm hearing. He heard the noise. He said it was very noticeable. They called Mazda, and, according to the tech, Mazda apparently has a lot of calls about this, but there's no official TSB for it yet.

Mazda said it's the cowl problem, where the cold weather makes it rattle against the base of the windshield. HOWEVER...

I honestly don't think that's the problem. When driving, if I put my head way forward, like past the steering wheel, I hear the noise to my left, right, and above me. And it seems to only be at the edges of the windshield, where the glass meets the seal. It seems like the only place I DON'T hear the noise is at the base of the windshield.

They set a service appointment for this coming Monday at 8 AM, and they have to give me a ride to work because he said the fix will take half a day. When I asked why so long, he said that the cowl and dashboard on the 2010 M3s are a little more complex than the older models.

So, I'm hesitant to let them dive in there and take things apart, because I don't think it's the cowl. I'm going to another dealership tomorrow on my lunch break that's right near where I work, to hopefully take one of their techs for a ride. This time I'm going to make them do what I do...lean forward, and LISTEN. If they still think it's the cowl rattling against the base of the windshield, then perhaps I'll let the other dealer go ahead and do the repair.

The tech that went for a ride with me tonight was just a young kid, who didn't look like he was listening all that hard, and trying to determine where the noise was coming from. He just said "yeah, I think there might be a TSB in for this...for the cowl". I would have felt better had he put forth some more effort and done a couple tests to see if that's indeed where the noise was.

I still really think it's the windshield seal. A second opinion will really help I think.

End rant. Ugh. Car noises. Such a huge pain. I just wanna drive my new M3 without getting mad, haha.

It is the cowl and I solved the problem with double stick tape and thick felt pads. When the temp goes down the plastic shrinks and all the pieces have play in them. I did this fix two weeks ago and haven't heard anymore creaking. I did this on both passenger and driver side. I used about five felt pads on either side and about a foot of tape along the front where the push pins sandwich the cowling together. The cowling is solid now and doesn't have anymore play in it. So far so good
