I was worried about dirt sticking to it so thats why I did clear on top. I also did my fog surrounds...
Did you take your bumper off to get the fog surrounds out?

I didnt know you could peel plasti dip off.... maybe I'll return the can I just picked up and use the Krylon Fusion I used inside my headlights.

Update: Just found lots of pics of this 'bleach method'. It takes a few days and its easier to just scuff and spray them. For those curious about the bleach method to remove the chrome, check this out...

Mazda Forums - View Single Post - DIY : Painting Badges

I may just pickup some night shades tail light spray and spray the emblems with that. Since its transparent it may look like black chrome? Then bury it in clear...

Doesn't look like he floated on the clear real well. He wound up with a serious case of orange peel.

^ Yea... looks like his dusted it a few times and is very gritty. I LOVE throwing on a final coat of clear. Looks like glass and is seck-C.

UPDATE: I just "tested" this plasti dip on my "mazdaspeed3" emblem since I dont plan to put it back on the car. I have to say Im not diggin it. Now dont get me wrong, it looks nice once it dries (matte black), but as one member mentioned, it peels right off. I was able to remove it all with ease with a fingernail in no time and the emblem is now back to chrome with no signs of ever being sprayed. Im not a fan of the idea of spraying a rubberized "paint" with a laquer or enamel clearcoat. It just doesnt sound like it will hold up long at all. So I picked up a can of Night Shades today and will see how the black chrome idea turns out. If it turns out nice and is durable once dry I will post some pics and then I will remove my "M"s and do them with it.

No need to remove the bumper for the fog surrounds. Another member helped me out in one of his posts...

Bleach will indeed remove the chrome from the emblems. But it literally takes 4 days to soak. After that you need to scrub them with peroxide and a wire brush to get the copper off.

As others have mentioned and I will second this from experience. PLASTI-DIP!

I did a few test pieces last week (the 3 and mazdaspeed emblems) and they turned out looking really nice. They are obviously more of a flat black, but that's what I'm going for (and so should you! lol).

I'll be doing my M-blems this week when I have some time to remove/etc.

I'd go ahead and sand them down a bit with some 400-grit, then go for 4-8 LIGHT coats of plasti-dip.

You'll love it. I'll post pics of mine on the boards when done.

There is a screw holding the fog surrounds so if you don't want to break something on a new car go right ahead, it doesn't take that long to remove the bumper to do it without breaking something.

When you're Plati-Dippin', I believe the further you spray from whatever you're spraying, the smoother the outcome feels/looks, the closer you spray the object, the more matte it is... Also, the more coats you put on the tougher it is to peel off... I've heard using the paint (Krylon) can end up chipping quite easily, and you have to keep touching it up every so often to maintaing it's look...

Food for thought
