That's just the type of intake it is. Some of the SRI's feature a "ram air" duct that funnels air into the filter, but not all of them (e.g. this one).

Couple of answers...

Shooting to release the Intake/Inlet for the Speed3 on Monday for ship Tuesday. Cold air boxes for each of these cars are on the plate for upcoming projects so I'll have progress reports on them soon. I do have some new ideas on how to improve our cold air boxes, so I'll be implementing them as well. The cold air box is an additional improvement to focus nothing but cold outside air into the short ram intake. Here's a writeup on the Cold Air Induction Boxes.

As for shipping, when you get the box you'll see that we don't stuff it all in a tiny box and overcharge on shipping, we pack things in a way that is commensurate with the quality of our products.

I'm excited to get the core products for the 2010's off my plate so we can discuss other out of the box ideas for performance gains and functionality improvements for these cars. Until then I've got my work cut out for me. I need to do a Rear Chassis Brace on the MZ3 and MS3, Front Strut Bar on the MS3, etc.

For now this weekend though, I'm having some fun - building a 10 gallon brewing system with a good friend of mine out in my shop at home. Lots of fun stainless TIG welding. It's a really trick system - PID loop temperature controllers, twin high temp fluid pumps, built in plate chiller, etc. I'm attaching some of the photos of the welding fun in progress (including one of me). Good times. Ignore the mess, we prepped two vintage BMW's (a 1969 2500 Sedan and a 1972 Bavaria) to drive from SW Washington to SF, California last week including an Automatic to 5-Speed swap and two cooling system overhauls so I spent most of the day today cleaning up after people who were using my shop. And don't make fun of my Crocs.

I was just wondering, is there any increase in engine "noise" that can be heard in the cab. I am still going to order it, but I am just curious.

Just about any aftermarket intake will cause some degree of sound level increase. Notice I didn't say "noise" as that is something you don't want to hear and I love the intake sound

Heheh...I could TIG Weld in a three piece suit. It's astonishingly clean, no spatter - at least with the electrode negative setting for stainless steel. A/C setting and aluminum are a little messier, but not much. Nothing like MIG or Flux Core welding, both of which I am not a huge fan of.
