Default Interesting Post-CorkSport SRI Install Observation

FWIW... Prior to installing the CorkSport SRI, it seemed like I was always cleaning soot from around my exhaust tips, presumably due to the car running rich.

After installing the SRI, I have noticed a significant reduction in the amount of soot that collects around the tips. Not knowing a lot of about cars, is it possible this is due to the air increase resulting in an increase in the amount of fuel detonated (and not passed out through the tips)?

Also, I've recorded a 1-2 mpg increase in fuel economy since the installation, which is great since I have a 110-mile daily commute.

I ahve the stock exhaust, but there is only just a bit of soot that gathers there. I put the Corkspoprt SRI on in just a week from taking delivery of the car, so I really have nothing to compare....

That is interesting though..... more complete combustion?? Makes sense! Good!

I have noticed the same, and I believe it is because the air to fuel ratio changes. apparently mazdas run rich as it is, which is why you get more soot build up on the back of your car

Not sure. I haven't installed an SRI yet but imo if the ecu is following the fuel mapping, even with the increased air flow it would increase fuel to compensate and still yeild an equivalent rich mixture. I cleaned my car and reset my ecu by disconnecting the battery and noticed less soot but the same mileage. I also changed gas from a shell station to a sunoco station and have gotten much better gas mileage from the sonoco gas. I normally average 286 to 315 miles off of 12ish gallons. 3/4 highway 1/4 city

In my previous car, the 1st gen 3, I installed a F5 CAI and had noticed increased gas mileage, around 1L/100km (I am in Canada, metric system). So I think any intake will yield better efficiency gain, prehaps from better combustions.

Interesting... I disconnected the negative side of the battery, too, when installing the SRI (per the instructions). Perhaps the reset led to the less soot. Either way, I'm happy and have less cleaning to do.

Just an FYI, I took off my CS SRI today to put back my stock intake as I have a recon inspection tomorrow for my drop and I noticed something "clunking" around in the filter. Removed the filter and saw the diffuser had detached and was rolling around in there. I don't know how long it was loose bouncing around in the filter, but it never threw a CEL. Just a heads up to check thet every so often. Other than that, no issues, awesome sound and performance, great product!

Are you planning on calling CS for a replacement or going to glue it? I was one of the original owners of the CS SRI and it worked great for a while but depending on the temperature and humidity the CEL came on. You might get away with running without the diffuser for a while, but unless you are in the perfect climate, you will probably eventually get the CEL.

The soot is mostly a complication with the exhaust gasses created in new direct injection engines. There still is no perfect fix for this but it's being worked on and although it won't all stop at once (talking about all new GDI engines on the market). The increased air velocity at lower engine speeds may actually help a more complete combustion. The soot can also come from an engine that is not running very rich but i just rich locally at the spark plug and leaving excess fuels unable to burn and the carbons flying at your rear bumper.

I just put my SRI on as well though and I havn't noticed it yet but I havn't even really looked at the rear of the car that closely... But before now I would notice every day how much it was coming out.

Soooooooo.... i dunno maybe it helped - i hope it did!

My car threw a CEL once and the code reported 4 different possibilities. One was a lean cylinder, one was a bad O2 sensor, MAF issue and the last was a vacuum leak. Anyway it turned off after I disassembled the intake box put it back together. Not sure if that abnormality made my car go into a different fuel mapping to correct the issue and used more gas that caused the soot or not but it was months ago and I only reset the ECU when I was installing my DDM HID kit.

Hopefully whatever it was stays the way it is. I hate looking at the back of my car and seeing all the soot/dirt... it's kinda like I have to wipe my cars arse
