how does the filter location affect the drain plug? i've changed my oil once already but didn't think it wouldn't fit...

+1 why would the filter affect that? Second I highly doubt it unless you were to create your own drain plug. Do a side by side of 2010-11 drain plug with a skyactiv and there different. The only way I can think it would work is to modify the oil pan itself but that be a PITA.

you shouldn't need leverage either... sounds like you're over tightening

I bought a standard bolt and I wouldn't get my wrench in there because of the oil filter being right next to it. I'll go to the dealer to see if they shed some light on this. I might be over-tightening the current draig plug too.
