Default Plasti-dip Rear Valance

I been wanting to paint my rear valance black for awhile and I saw on an audi and subaru forum that they've use Plasti-dip on to black out body parts. It cost $7 from Home Depot and can be peeled off it you ever decide to remove it. I decided it won't hurt and tried it out this weekend. Here are the results. I just masked off around the valance and put on a few light coats. I recommend removing the masking tape a few minute after each coat so that the plasti-dip doesn't soldify and come off with the masking tape.

I've been contemplating on doing something like this. I was gonna go the vinyl route but this looked pretty good, DaTigerX. Couple of questions:

Did you use the spraycan version or did brushwork on it?

How many coats did you use?

How easy will this come off if I decide to take it off later?

Thanks man. It looks really good.

My question is, HOW does it come off? Paint-thinner?

The plastic coating just peels off. Almost like getting Elmer glue off of your fingers. I used the dip can version of it to paint the fog light surround with a brush. It dries fast and goes on lumpy. I had to use several coats and smooth out each layer to get a flat surface. With the rear valance being such a large area I would use the spray can.

So wouldn't it chip very easily? Would a remedy for that be... clear coat?

Edit: I ask this cause I want to black out a lip spoiler if I end up getting it...

I used the stuff on my fog surround because regular paint would probably chip on the front of the car and that low to the ground. It's been on for over 6 months with no chips, but then again it is on thick. The spray can is pretty cheap and I think at least with the dip can, once you break the seal, the unused liquid will probably oxidize with the air and get hard in the can.

I used the spray paint version. If you do a few light coats and don't stop moving the spray can it should be a consistent texture. It's not clear coat smooth, but the texture is almost the same as black plastic trim on the front bumper's grill. So it doesn't look out of place. Like VprRacr said, it comes off like elmer glue on your finger. If you is ever want to remove it, just grab one end of the plasti dip paint and peel it off. Audi owners and mitsubishi evo forum users, use it to black out their front grills. And they've said it stands up well, even over the harsh winters. So I think the rear bumper will hold up even better since it'll be less harsh in the rear of the car.

I have been lurking around here for a while but haven't made a post yet... So here goes my first!

I did it last week also. I intended on posting pics here but forgot. It looks really really good on the 5-doors. The black ties in REALLY well with the black in the rear lights. I am really impressed with mine. I'll post pics when I take some...

I hear people use the clear version to cover their whole front bumper and hood during the winter to protect it from the salt and sand. So I don't think it'll harm the paint at all. When I was car shopping I even noticed that Honda uses the clear version on at least the Fit to protect it during shipping to the dealership instead of the usual white vinyl.
