Yes, I'm in the UK. My 2006 Accord is a CL7 7th Gen Accord made in Japan - sometimes called the Euro Accord.

I just got out the 2017 Mazda 3 gearing charts, auto vs manual for the 5 door GT. In summary, one would at any given speed at the same gear, have a greater RPM for the manual than the auto, a clear reason why autos are giving better fuel mileage. Additionally, the final drive ratio helps the auto be more fuel efficient, [Not that any of these numbers will convince a person who wants an auto to get a manual nor the reverse, but comparative numbers for those who wish.]

No doubt someone has noted this before...it looks like 1st and reverse have changed. I believe these were the pre-2017 ratios:

1st 3.36
2nd 1.95
3rd 1.30
4th 1.03
5th 0.84
6th 0.68
Reverse 3.38
Final Drive 3.85

With those ratios, 80 MPH is reached at 2750 RPM when running the 25.6" diameter OEM tire.

Yeah, 2750 sounds more reasonable for 80 mph with the standard.

The auto is just fine with the taller 6th because it downshifts every time you need to pass. The automatic transmission is good in the sense that it doesn't make you want to kill yourself with sloppy/slow action (as opposed to the dry clutch DCTs in the Ford Focus, Dodge Dart and the planetary boxes in the Corolla), but with this engine you're going to want to get the manual (if you can use it) in order to take advantage of every last bit of horsepower. You're going to need it if you want any sort of decent acceleration above 65 mph without waiting for the automatic to kick down.

The Euro Accord is the platform the TSX is based upon. Larger than a Civic, but smaller the the U.S. Accord, it's a well regarded platform.

The auto shifts down VERY quickly. You can also run the auto in Sport mode and it will stay at higher RPMs/lower gear up to a point. The other option for the AT is to paddle shift but if left unattended too long, it will revert back to auto.
I have never had the occasion to need to stay at higher RPM longer than one of these methods could solve.
I love to drive my car.
I also love Big Gulps, talking on the infotainment system, HD traffic, and lots of other things that I can't do when shifting.

Have a 2016 3S as a loaner right now. VERY different power band than my GT. I can see why a MT would help with this model.

It is a preference thing...plain and simple.

And in my opinion anybody who complains about a manual in traffic shouldn't be in a manual anyways. If you love manual really and truly, you would even prefer it in traffic.
Well said, the younger generation just doesn't want to be engaged. It is there loss.
