2) Autocrossers know that whatever you bring out, you can find a class to run it in. I've seen people show up in bone-stock Honda Accords and Chrysler LeBarons and run them. I've seen stock Minis on street tires win their class, easily. Autocrossing isn't all about power or hotrodding - it's about driving skill.

I may well take my 3 to the autocross. What I won't do is build it into a kidney-punishing track beast. I've been down that road before, and ended up with a class-winning "street" car that nobody would want to drive on an actual street!
exactly, you made up my point, racing team with huge amount of cash to play with, and dedicated to win, are the only group would not mind to buy a brand new car to make it a track ready.
Unless you own an oil rig, or just are wealthy enough to not care about $20k, you wont build a race car off t he Mazda3, even if you are that wealthy, there are a lot more nicer car to play with than a 4 door sedan/ 5dr hatch.

I never drove a 944 so no word on that, but I never ment such a car. They are nice cars, but these days, they are only good for cruising on weekends. I've been there, done that, saw that. a 1993 California owned, nicely cared sport car, had build up rust and those old days, cars hardly had any brakes compare to more modern car. But for a budget of $5000 I can pick up a higher mileage BMW 3 series with manual, and upgrade a few parts as well. which is not too old to make it poor performance, and its not too new to care if I cracked the bumper or dent the fender. Nor has the premium ownership cost of a Porsche. So I can have a much more blest on that than a per say brand new mazda3.
BMW was just an example, there are a hole bunch of cars that are more performance oriented. from Miatas all the way to gently used gen1 mazdaspeed or 350z.

Tracking a brand new mazda 3 is totally fine too me, but I don't call it wise.

Garage
It's a daily driver for me but not dead stock...I'm still modding it.
It will also be in the local car shows this spring/summer with a local custom shop to showcase the work they do.

It's not that bad to build up a 3 for HPDE or AutoX purposes. That's what the poll choice was right? It's rare for any individual on this forum to even be close to considering an actual, campaigned racecar (there IS one on M3F though). So the whole budget and parts thing is kind of moot.

I'm not sure where my car fits in haha...

Daily driver on the Soviet-quality streets of New Orleans. I'll do some mods, but nothing that wouldn't look stock to your average bystander. I was just looking at the car with my fog lights on, for example, and really disliked how their yellow color notably contrasted with the headlights. So a change there could be nice but look stock.

I don't like the options we have here. My car is my DD, but I plan to mod it pretty aggressively.

Same here!

It is my DD but lighter wheels, better sport/performance tires, stiffer sway bar, better exhaust, lowering springs (maybe coilovers), brake upgrades, better air intake and a few other things are on my to do list.

I'm going for a sport luxury kind of feel with this car. Something comparable to a Lexus or lower end Audi. This car wasn't built for speed so I'm not going to pretend it is. Minimal performance mods here, mostly all for esthetics and making the car a nice place to be in.

I think it's coming along well with the white pearl contrasted by the red leather. The white LED everything and HIDs, the tint and blacked out rear end really made a visual difference and I had a couple of people confuse the car for a Lexus (CT200h).

Lowering the car, and 19" TSW Nurburgrings in bronze are the next immediate things, followed by an exhaust. Would love some aero add ons but Im going to wait and see what the aftermarket comes out with. The car can absolutely benefit from a larger rear spoiler and more agressive front lip.
