Priorities stated--good for you, Mazda

"Mazda’s global CEO Masamichi Kogai told CarAdvice that if it were to rush into developing SUVs instead of perfecting its sedan vehicle, it will not be able to make great driving cars."

Skyactiv = no more "zoom-zoom".... but rather efficiency uber alles.... still, killin' it, and without any hybrids or ev's in the line-up, to boot!

Mazda Defends Human Drivers, Disses Robots at the Detroit Auto Show - The Drive

"'You can pry the steering wheel out of my cold, dead hand,' says Davis, Mazda’s senior vice-president of U.S. operations, racer, and race-team owner. 'The autonomous position we take is that the human brain is the most powerful and valuable computer in the car, and will be for some time. We are firmly on the side of driving.'

"For the moment, it’s not clear that Americans are embracing his Defense of Driving. Mazda, despite its virtually unmatched lineup of great looking, fun-to-drive and critically-lauded cars—from the iconic MX-5 Miata to the all-new CX-5 shown in Detroit—saw its sales tumble 6.7 percent in 2016."

Mazda dealers look to recover from a rough 2016

Q: What is the average days supply on new vehicles for a Mazda dealer?

A: We're probably around 75 days supply right now. We've been as low as, in previous years, under 40.

Unfortunately, if day supply is going to continue to grow, [dealers] are not going to order vehicles from the manufacturer until they sell the older stuff. We're hoping that the manufacturer notices that and helps incentivize these vehicles.

Mazda does not necessarily want to put heavy incentives on vehicles. But if they see their dealers are starting to sit with inventory, they're going to have to.

I'm afraid that the "supply" of people who want to really drive in the US are drying up. The decrease in manual transmissions probably doesn't help matters. Driving cars now days is akin to operating your dish washer. Push a few buttons and the appliance does most of the work. Who knows maybe Mazda will spin it around by some miracle but I doubt it. The era of the self driving car will come to a close one day and most people will cheer.

It’s especially pronounced for the teens—in 2014, just 24.5 percent of 16-year-olds had a license, a 47-percent decrease from 1983, when 46.2 percent did. And at the tail end of the teen years, 69 percent of 19-year-olds had licenses in 2014, compared to 87.3 percent in 1983, a 21-percent decrease.
