The Smart car has a great construction that is actually pretty safe.
Some cars are getting so well reinforced that its really impossible to smash some parts of the car. Also damn near impossible to cut through too.

Anyone impacting a wall at 70 MPH would have serious injuries. More internal than anything. HAHA, and there she says it just after I type it.

Newer cars are built so basically the front end crumbles back and moves down towards the ground. This transfers energy away from passenger compartment. Ideally, there should be no intrusion into the footwells during a collision. It does happen from time to time depending on what is struck and how. This is also why the back end lifts, because the front should crumple down (rather than up into your dash)

Now the weakest point of the car during a collision is the area where the firewall meets the chassis on the bottom. This may give and cause lower leg injuries. And why there are now knee-bags being put into cars. I think Kia? had the first ones?
