2015 Mazda3 Gains Manual Transmission on 2.5L Engine

Mazda3 shoppers can now choose to row their own gears while enjoying the more powerful 2.5-liter four-cylinder powertrian.

The Japanese automaker has added a manual transmission option for models equipped with the larger 2.5-liter engine in addition to the six-speed automatic. On the hatchback equipped with a six-speed manual, fuel economy will return 26 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway which is slightly worse than the automatic which nets 27 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. For the sedan model equipped with a 2.4-liter and a manual transmission, owners will get 25 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway.

Regardless of the body style, the manual transmission will be about $1,050 cheaper than the automatic option. Minor changes for the 2015 model year include standard Mazda Connect infotainment system and rear-view camera on the i Touring model while all buyers can get Mazda Connect upgraded with navigation for $399.95.

Hard to find in CA - Stealership claimed they were able to find my daughter "the only one" in NorCal - Soul Red SGT Manual - She loves it - oh, and to add before it is said, "wow, what a nice dad" - she is 19 paid for it in full :-) - we got a great insurance payout on the 2014 the someone destroyed for her (which she also paid for).

What attacked/attracts me to the Mazda 3 GT was/is:

* Hatch;
* Manual transmission;
* Enjoyable on curvy roads;
* Enough power to enjoy moving away from a red light, and also to pass a car on a medium-length straight on a country road;
* Great steering and very comfortable seats;
* Ability to spec it the way I wanted, e.g. leather, safety systems, and nav -- and be well under the $32,000+ range of its true competitors;
* It's long term positive "rep", e.g., a C&D top ten best car four of the last ten years;
* My test drive (only time I have driven a Mazda) verified how much fun it is to drive!

Having test-driven the 2.5L / MT6 version of the Mazda3 GT, my impression was very good indeed. It seems the GT isn't proving very popular, though, at least not in Canada. When I was hunting for mine (on the used market), 2.0L versions outnumbered the 2.5L by at least 20 to 1, whether you picked hatch or sedan, auto or stick.

I suspect that at least part of the reason is that a Mazda3 GT is simply priced out of the heart of the market, at a bit over $30k CAD. At that price point, buyers wanting performance will go for a GTI or Focus ST, while those who care about space and/or luxury have a pretty broad range of competitors to choose from. The GT fills a nice niche for a premium small all-rounder, but it's not a high-volume niche.
