2010 Mazda 3 Exterior Design, Official Details

Mazda played it a bit safe with their flagship vehicle by taking popular cues from the Mazda stable. Notice the flared wheel arches similar to the RX-8, the new headlamps (2009+ Mazda 6) and a more squared off rear end (2009+ Mazda 6).
New details on the face of the upcoming Mazda 3 were released today with Mazda stating their intent to bring the 2010 Mazda 3’s design more in line with Mazda’s global design language that will become a more unified look across the entire Mazda family of vehicles.

With the 2010 Mazda 3, Mazda wanted to show off the smooth lines in the new design but still create an aggressive stance similar to an animal about to pounce its prey. To do so, Mazda added subtle, wedge shaped character lines to each side of the 2010 Mazda 3.
Wanting to give owners an effortless showroom like appearance for the second generation Mazda 3, Mazda sculpted both the hood and side surfaces to create a highly reflective surface area that reflects light and the Mazda 3’s physical surroundings.
Adaptive Front Lighting System

The brand new Adaptive Front Lighting System will be a standard feature on all 2010 Mazda 3 GT (Grand Touring) models. The Adaptive Front Lighting System works by automatically leveling the 2010 Mazda 3’s bi-xenon headlights as you turn the steering wheel.
This is especially useful when driving in rural locales or areas of low lighting because the headlights will follow the turn as you drive, revealing any potential road hazards from a much safer distance than cars without the system.
The 2010 Mazda 3 is the first vehicle in its class to offer this type of lighting system.
Aerodynamic Outside

Mazda went to great lengths to revise and improve the exterior of the 2010 Mazda 3 to make it more aerodynamic. Through all of Mazda’s hard work and efforts comes a drag coefficient of just 0.29 which is only 0.03 more than the current generation Toyota Prius.
Improved aerodynamics help the 2010 Mazda 3 squeeze up to 33 mpg highway out of its 2.0-liter 148 hp motor and up to 29 mpg highway out of the s-line’s 2.5-liter 167 hp motor.
