The 2010 Mazda 3 sedan made its official debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show last week and, shortly after, the first drive reviews of the Mazda 3 came rolling in from the North American automotive press.

“In some ways, successful vehicles are more difficult to redesign than unpopular ones. Consider these facts about the Mazda3: one in three Mazda vehicles sold worldwide is a Mazda3; in North America, the Mazda3 makes up 40 per cent of the company’s total sales; and in 2008, the Mazda3 remains one of Canada’s top-selling vehicles even though it was introduced here over five years ago.”

“Mazda gave itself a tough act to follow. The original Mazda 3 that launched in 2004 was an exceptional small car that delivered good fuel economy without sacrificing driving dynamics. That first-generation 3 didn’t skimp on refinement or interior quality, either. Rich plastics, unique design, and a luxurious array of optional equipment made the 3 a luxury sport sedan in a class full of mundane transportation devices. Now with the launch of the next-generation 3, would Mazda keep these attributes for its replacement?”

“Think “evolution” not “revolution.” That’s what Ruben Archilla, group manager of research and development at Mazda North American Operations, tells us about the 2010 Mazda 3. Our translation: Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke.

With sales of the 2009 Mazda 3 still high and the car widely recognized as a class leader, the idea of fully revamping it is kind of questionable anyway. The 2010 Mazda 3, then, is a complete restyling with just enough mechanical updates and new features to freshen up its feel and bump up its amenity count.”

“We’ve always liked the Mazda3. It’s a vehicle that’s done well in just about every head-to-head road test we’ve ever conducted. And now that we’ve driven and received the full download on the new Mazda3, we don’t see anything about our original assessment that needs changing. But is it really “all new”?”

“They’d better not screw this car up. That’s all I can think on my flight out to Los Angeles where, on the eve of that city’s annual auto show, I’ll be driving the new 2010 Mazda3. The current car, in its fifth and final year on the market, it still Motive’s favorite car in the small sedan segment, despite the fact that each one of its competitors has been revised in the meantime. That’s because all of those other cars — Civic, Corolla, Focus, Cobalt, Sentra, and so on — aren’t much fun. Even the Mitsubishi Lancer, which shares its roots with the devilish Lancer Evolution, isn’t as emotionally gratifying as the aging 3. No sir, Mazda better not mess with such a winning formula.”
