The Euro Mazda 3 is supposed to be getting a 2.2L diesel which may sit in the place of the U.S. 2.5L.

Thankfully, Mazda is NOT pulling another "Mazda6" by having a NA Specific version. There will be ONE Mazda3 worldwide. What you see in the NA Spec version will be nearly identical in the EU version much like the current 3. Trim packages and minor regulatory tweaks will be the only visible differences. There WILL be more events coming, including the hatch unveiling in December (US and EU will get Hatch). Mazdaspeed to follow perhaps in Geneva, spring 2009 (unofficial at this time). Still bugs me when they say the car is based on the "Ford Focus Global C1 Chassis". Ahh, no. The C1 chassis was a collaborative effort jointly developed by Mazda,Volvo, and Ford in Cologne. At least 4 Volvos, 2 Mazdas and 2 Fords ride atop versions of the platform. In then US this is important, because the US Focus still rides on the old Ford C170 Chassis so the 3 bears absolutely no relation to the Focus in America.

We'll probably know more about the European Mazda 3 when (if) Mazda introduces the Mazda 3 hatchback at the December 2nd Bologna Motor Show.

Thanks. No word on when the Mazdaspeed 3 will debut but the Detroit or Geneva Auto Show are definitely possibilities given their high profile nature. The Mazdaspeed3 was first revealed at the 2006 Geneva Auto Show so I'd put my bet on the International Geneva Motor Show in March 2009.

December 2nd, not bad. I figured we'd have to wait longer to see our five-door friend. Any news on a Mazdaspeed3, or when we can expect that? I'll be getting some form of the new '3' for sure, and definitely appreciate all the time you put into this site.
